Member volume equals cross-sectional area multiplied by length. Multiplying volume by mass density gives mass; multiplying by unit weight gives force.

For beam self-weight, it is usually faster to multiply unit weight directly by section area to obtain force per length.

Use cubic units

A linear conversion factor must be applied three times to convert volume. Do not convert ft³ to m³ with the ordinary feet-to-metres factor.
