Library overview

Europe steel shapes

The European catalog combines 1,239 metric-native sections from the supplied Eurocode 3 UK National Annex workbooks, the selected IPN table in ArcelorMittal Sections and Merchant Bars 2026-1, and the supplied hot-finished hollow-section workbook. It includes IPE beams, IPN taper-flange beams, HE, HD, HL and HLZ wide-flange sections, HP piles, UPE and UPN channels, equal and unequal angles, plus RHS, SHS and CHS. Search by designation, compare dimensions and major- and minor-axis properties, download family charts, or load a selected section into the Optimal Beam calculator. Only the IPN rows from the “EN Taper flange beams” sheet are imported from the ArcelorMittal workbook; its other product sheets are intentionally excluded. Metric source values remain canonical, while imperial values are derived for the unit switcher. Confirm critical dimensions, product standards, grades and availability against the applicable source publication before final design or fabrication.

Designations

Understanding Europe designations

European designations are metric. Some families encode nominal depth and mass; others use a nominal size or outside dimensions.

IPE 300
Standard IPE beam with a nominal depth of 300 mm. Heavier and lighter IPE variants retain their published suffixes or mass-based designation.
IPN 300
Taper-flange I section with a nominal depth of 300 mm.
HE 300×149
HE wide-flange section in the 300 mm series with a mass of 149 kg/m.
UPE 300
Parallel-flange channel with a nominal depth of 300 mm.
L 100×75×10
Unequal angle with 100 mm and 75 mm legs and 10 mm thickness.
RHS 200×100×8
Rectangular hollow section with outside height × width × wall thickness in millimetres.

Data notes

Europe data notes

  • The European library contains 1,239 sections across 13 visible families.
  • Only IPN rows from the ArcelorMittal “EN Taper flange beams” sheet are imported; all other sheets in that workbook are excluded.
  • Only the RHS, SHS and CHS sheets are imported from the hollow-section workbook.
  • Equal and unequal L sections plus RHS, SHS and CHS are also available in the UK shared catalog.
  • Published y-y properties are mapped to the finder’s x axis and published z-z properties to its y axis; the mapping is retained in source metadata.
  • Metric values are canonical. Imperial values are derived for display and calculator compatibility.

Methodology

Data source

Optimal Beam preserves the underlying published source values and uses normalized values for unit conversion and calculations. Values displayed in the table may be rounded for readability. Confirm critical dimensions and properties against the official publisher’s tables before fabrication or final design.

Questions & answers

Europe FAQs

How many European sections are included?

The European catalog contains 1,239 sections across IPE, IPN, HE, HD, HL, HLZ, HP, UPE, UPN, L, RHS, SHS and CHS families.

Which ArcelorMittal sections are imported?

Only the 21 IPN rows from the “EN Taper flange beams” sheet in Sections and Merchant Bars 2026-1 are imported. The other sheets are intentionally excluded.

Are angle and hollow sections also in the UK catalog?

Yes. The UK library shares 224 L sections and 658 RHS, SHS and CHS sections with Europe. Those 882 shared rows sit alongside 314 British-only rolled and tee sections.

What is the difference between IPE and IPN?

IPE sections use parallel flange faces, while IPN sections have tapered inner flange faces. Compare the published geometry and properties rather than treating equal nominal depths as interchangeable.

What is the difference between UPE and UPN?

UPE channels have parallel flange faces; UPN channels use tapered inner flange faces. Their widths, thicknesses and section properties differ at the same nominal depth.

Can European sections be analyzed in Optimal Beam?

Yes. Select a section and choose Analyze to load its geometry and section properties into the beam calculator. Metric is the default, and Imperial display is also available.
